FAQs

Have an electric-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!

  • How do I know I need a new panel?

If you have Zinsco or split bus panels, you should consider a replacement. Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels have been flagged as a fire hazard over the past few years. Call North By Northwest Services LLC today, and an electrical contractor will be happy to go over the details with you.

  • How long is an electrical panel good for?

In our experience, the average lifespan of an electrical panel is around 40 years. Anything older should be replaced, so you don't overload the panel and cause a fire hazard. This can be applied to the exterior meter bases as well. Our electrical contractors recommend replacing both at the same time.

  • When should I replace my smoke detectors?

We recommend that you change out the smoke detector every 10 years. Remember to change batteries every spring and fall or get a 10-year battery. Contact us today to speak to an electrical contractor for more information.

  • Do you offer any warranties for your work?

We offer a five-year warranty on our labor and basic materials, and we also honor manufacturer warranties. Speak to an electrical contractor from our team today to learn more.

  • Do you install generators?

Yes, our electrical contractor team installs standby generators.

  • Which is better, a portable or a standby generator?

These both are great options. However, a standby by generator adds value to your home and is typically more convenient compared to a portable one. Standby generators can be plumbed into a natural gas source and will turn on and off as needed without any work on your end. Portable generators can be an affordable option but are heavy and require a lot of work on your end to get started. Call us today and an electrical contractor can go into more detail with you.

  • My panel seems to be full, can I add a spot for an EV car charging station?

This depends on the size of the panel and if we are able to fit the breaker as needed. An electrical contractor from our team can determine the proper needs with an onsite evaluation.

  • Can my panel handle my EV station?

It depends on the size, and we typically prefer a 200-amp service. Contact us to schedule an appointment with an electrical contractor, and they will take a look at your panel.

  • If I have ungrounded wiring, am I required to change it?

Grounding is very important. Ungrounded wiring can pose a safety or fire risk. Call us today to schedule an estimate with an electrical contractor.

  • Do you do knob and tube wire replacements?

Our electrical contractor team can do knob and tube wire replacements. Call us today for more details about this process.
